     Welcome to 5th Grade Social Studies! This year we will be focusing on learning about the geography, history, government, and economies of the United States, Canada, and Latin America. We will learn about these areas through readings, projects, hands on activities, writing assignments, and more. During the 1st Quarter, we will also prepare for the NYS Social Studies Exam. This test will be given in November.

Grading

Grades will be based on tests and quizzes, classwork, homework, projects, and participation or effort. Please check your child's Homework Folder for graded papers.

Geography Quizzes

Students will be expected to learn the location of countries in the Western Hemisphere. They will have a quiz on Mondays. Geography Quizzes will take place on Tuesday if there is a snow day or holiday on Monday. We will be starting with North America and then the United States. Geography packets are kept in their Homework Folder and should be studied from each night.

Tests

Please check your child's agenda for upcoming tests. Your child should study their notebook, textbook, and study guide to help prepare for tests.

Homework

Your child will have homework two to three days per week. Their homework should be kept in their homework folder and will be out of a packet or on a handout.

     Welcome to 6th Grade Social Studies! This year we will be focusing on learning about the geography, history, government, and economies of the Eastern Hemisphere. We will learn about this area through readings, projects, hands on activities, writing assignments and more.

1st Quarter

Review geography skills

Early People/ Stone Age/ Neolithic Period

Mesopotamia

Ancient Egypt

Review the location of North American and South American countries.

Learn the location of African countries and physical features

2nd Quarter

Huang He Valley

Southwest Asia (Ancient Israelites, Persian Empire, Phoenician, and Lydians)

Ancient China

Ancient Greece

Learn the location of Asian countries and physical features.

4th Quarter

The Renaissance

Middle Ages

Modern Times (Review for 7th Grade Social Studies)

Finish learning the location of European countries and physical features.

Grading

Geography Quizzes

Your children will also be expected to learn the location of countries in the Eastern Hemisphere and their physical features. Every Monday students will have a quiz on their assigned countries, unless there is a snow day or holiday. In the case of a snow day or holiday, quizzes will take place on Tuesday. Inside your child's Homework Folder is a packet on the assigned countries. They should study this packet each night.
